In ST Math Immersion, it's not about the right answers, but the right questions. Facilitation plays a pivotal role in creating a classroom rich with academic discourse. Asking facilitation questions that focus on student thinking rather than the answer helps engage them in deeper learning around the concepts. In this section, we'll provide you with some strategies to help students become better at processing, communicating, evaluating, and refining their own thinking.
In second grade, the focus is on building a strong sense of numbers and deepening students' understanding of addition and subtraction. Students will be engaged in problem solving, journal writing, whole-group lessons, and stations that include ST Math visual models, strategy games, small-group instruction, and engineering design principles.
In 4th grade, the focus is on fractions. Many kids fear fractions because they don’t understand how they work – they mix up the parts and don’t understand what they mean and what we do with them. Students will be engaged in fraction problem solving, journal writing, whole-group lessons, and stations that include ST Math visual models, strategy games, small-group instruction, and engineering design principles.
